About Us
The Mathewson Street Friendship Breakfast was founded in 2012 and became well known for its unique hospitality model. We’ve always strived to create a peer-driven atmosphere that works towards de-stigmatizing poverty and homelessness.
Over the past decade, our efforts have grown exponentially. What started as a Sunday breakfast event has transformed into a full-fledged 7-day a week operation. Under the dedicated leadership of our Outreach Director, Kevin Simon, a team of volunteers and staff is now available almost around the clock to meet the diverse needs of those who seek support at Mathewson.
Some of what we do is quantifiable, like the projected 2025 statistics on the homepage describe, such as the fact that we will serve over 50,000 meals this year. Yet, so much of what happens at Mathewson Street Church can’t be measured! What truly matters is the deep human connections that we form through care and services. These relationships play a pivotal role in reducing the amount of time someone experiences homelessness.
Through partnerships with housing-first agencies, collaborations with mental health, addiction, and domestic violence professionals, and hosting legal and medical clinics, we address a wide range of needs through collaboration and radical hospitality.
We are committed to walking in stride with our friends who are experiencing poverty and homelessness. We will always be an open door to those in need.

All are Welcome
We are one of the more than 300 United Methodist congregations belonging to the Reconciling Ministries Network. As part of the reconciling movement, we believe Christ’s love is meant for all God’s children. We thus welcome our brothers and sisters of all sexual orientations and gender identites.
Our parishioners include heterosexual, bisexual, homosexual, transgender and same-sex couples and families. Our faces are shades of black, brown and white. Our ages range from the very young to the very old. Some of us are people of means; others not so much. Our cultural backgrounds are diverse. But whatever our differences, we are united in believing that our hearts and actions should be guided by Jesus’ fundamental dictum to “love thy neighbor.
